Effects of the North Pacific Oscillation and Enso on Seasonally Averaged Temperatures in Califlornia

چکیده

The North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have effects on California that are of interest to energy producers and consumers. In particular, changes in the NPO are associated with statewide shifts in simultaneous wintertime temperatures, and, to a lesser extent, temperatures in the following summer. Observations over the period 1960 to 2001 indicate that the seasonally averaged temperature anomaly associated with the NPO is about 0.7 C in winter and 0.2 C in summer. The response is not linear; the warmth associated with positive NPO events is stronger than the cooling associated with negative NPO events. The seasonal temperature changes are accomplished by a simple shift in the distribution of daily average temperatures over much of California. However, over the Sierra Nevada, the shape of the daily temperature distribution changes as well, with the positive phase of the NPO associated with a smaller standard deviation in daily average temperature. This effect is probably too small to be of practical importance for energy producers, however. The seasonally averaged difference in temperature due to the NPO makes about a 150-heating-degree-day difference over the winter. The change in seasonally averaged temperatures due to ENSO is a considerably weaker effect than that due to the NPO; effects on energy producers due to ENSO are therefore more likely to arise from changes in precipitation in the Pacific Northwest.

Investigating the Relationship between Drought with Teleconnection Patterns (Case Study: Qara Qom Basin)

Aims & Backgrounds: Drought is a natural feature of an area and in every region that occurs, it leads to economic, social and environmental losses. In this research, the Teleconnection patterns in drought occurrence in Qarh Qom basin has been investigated. Methodology: In this regard, precipitation data of 30 rain gauge and synoptic stations as well as data on 32 numerical indexes of teleconnec...

The Role of Ekman Ocean Heat Transport in the Northern Hemisphere Response to ENSO

The influence of oceanic Ekman heat transport (Qek) on air–sea variability associated with ENSO teleconnections is examined via a pair of atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) experiments. In the mixed layer model (MLM) experiment, observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) for the years 1950–99 are specified over the tropical Pacific, while a grid of mixed layer models is coupled to the A...

An Atlantic influence on Amazon rainfall

Rainfall variability over the Amazon basin has often been linked to variations in Pacific sea surface temperature (SST), and in particular, to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). However, only a fraction of Amazon rainfall variability can be explained by ENSO. Building upon the recent work of Zeng (Environ Res Lett 3:014002, 2008), here we provide further evidence for an influence on Amazo...

The Impact of ENSO on Atmospheric Intraseasonal Variability as Inferred from Observations and GCM Simulations

The impact of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the atmospheric intraseasonal variability in the North Pacific is assessed, with emphasis on how ENSO modulates midlatitude circulation anomalies associated with the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) in the Tropics and the westward-traveling patterns (WTP) in high latitudes. The database for this study consists of the output of a general ci...

ENSO and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation: an integrated view of Pacific decadal dynamics

We show that decadal dynamics of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) are linked through their relationships to ENSO. The PDO and NPGO are the oceanic expression of the two dominant modes of North Pacific atmospheric variability -the Aleutian Low (AL) and the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO). We compute the two dominant modes of ocean/atmosphere co-...
